CNY Inspirations: Life lessons

H. Bernard Alex

The late Rev. Dr. Louis C. Walker Sr., the pastor of my formative years, exerted a powerful influence on my life. One of his sayings was, “Never tell all that you know, but know all that you tell!”

I didn’t understand the impact of that statement, but I celebrate it now. It’s not about keeping secrets or inside information, but about portions of your journey that need to be retained as inspiration to press forward. Like Mary, the mother of Jesus did some things that need to be kept in your heart’s vault!

Zen Fable : Balance and Moderation

An aged monk, who had lived a long and active life, was assigned a chaplain’s role at an academy for girls. In discussion groups he often found that the subject of love became a central topic. This comprised his warning to the young women:
“Understand the danger of anything-too-much in your lives. Too much anger in combat can lead to recklessness and death. Too much ardor in religious beliefs can lead to close-mindedness and persecution.
Too much passion in love creates dream images of the beloved – images that ultimately prove false and generate anger. To love too much is to lick honey from the point of a knife.”
“But as a celibate monk,” asked one young woman, “how can you know of love between a man and a woman?”
“Sometime, dear children,” replied the old teacher, “I will tell you why I became a monk.”

Interpretation ::

Without saying much, this tale shows us how we need to lead a life of moderation and balance all the time.

Zen tale : The Tunnel

Zenkai, the son of a samurai, journeyed to Edo and there became the retainer of a high official. He fell in love with the official’s wife and was discovered. In self-defense, he slew the official. Then he ran away with the wife.

Both of them later became thieves. But the woman was so greedy that Zenkai grew disgusted. Finally, leaving her, he journeyed far away to the province of Buzen, where he became a wandering mendicant.

To atone for his past, Zenkai resolved to accomplish some good deed in his lifetime. Knowing of a dangerous road over a cliff that had caused the death and injury of many persons, he resolved to cut a tunnel through the mountain there.

Begging food in the daytime, Zenkai worked at night digging his tunnel. When thirty years had gone by, the tunnel was 2,280 feet long, 20 feet high, and 30 feet wide.

Two years before the work was completed, the son of the official he had slain, who was a skillful swordsman, found Zenkai out and came to kill him in revenge.

“I will give you my life willingly,” said Zenkai. “Only let me finish this work. On the day it is completed, then you may kill me.”

So the son awaited the day. Several months passed and Zenkai kept on digging. The son grew tired of doing nothing and began to help with the digging. After he had helped for more than a year, he came to admire Zenkai’s strong will and character.

At last the tunnel was completed and the people could use it and travel in safety.

“Now cut off my head,” said Zenkai. “My work is done.”

“How can I cut off my own teacher’s head?” asked the younger man with tears in his eyes.

Interpretation

What we all can learn from this tale is we all can indeed reform through our own good deeds, anytime we wish to. Here, when we try hard enough, even the universe responds.

This year taught us that no good news is too small to share

“Summer is on its way and my partner and I managed to grow this rose which has a wonderful scent.” A picture of a beautiful orange flower accompanied the note—part of a weekly email sharing good news with the members of our research center. One year ago, an announcement like this could have seemed insignificant and irrelevant to the important work of science. But amid the difficulties of 2020, it was anything but. It put a smile on my face, and hopefully it did the same for my colleagues. It helped build human connection. And it reminded us that, even this year, good things happened.

Fable : Love transcends all

This happened 175 years back.

Dhanya was a kind hearted 50 year old woman belonging to a low caste. She was seen talking to a five year old brahmin boy with great intimacy. It appeared as though she was seeking some obligation and the boy gave her a firm commitment. The lady left the place with her eyes moist._
Dhanya was a poor mid wife, who attended to the delivery of the boy’s mother when he was born. From that day she developed an inexplicable emotional bondage with the boy. She felt that he was all in all for her and he would protect her in times of need._
After a period of 5 years it was decided to celebrate the Upanayanam of the boy. The boy’s elder brother was advising the young boy about the implication of the ritual and advised him about the code of conduct._
‘Maatru Biksha’ is an important concluding ritual in Upanayanam during which the boy receives the first Biksha (a cup of rice) from his mother and gets her blessings first. Every mother feels proud of this event._
When the elder brother was narrating about this ritual, the boy said that “I will receive the first Bhiksha from Dhanya only. I have given word to her”.
Having come from an orthodox family, the elder brother alarmingly said “It is great unorthodoxy & we will lose respect among the pundits in the village.”
The boy immediately retorted “Brother, everybody including elders requested Lord Rama not to leave for the forest. But Rama had promised his father and to keep up his ‘word’ he left the palace. In the same way I have given a word to Dhanya that I will treat her as my mother during the function. I don’t deserve this sacred thread if I don’t keep up my promise.”
Yet the brother was not convinced. The day arrived. With the auspicious playing of shehnai, among the chanting of mantras the function went on well. The elder brother thought the boy would have forgotten about the earlier discussion. The ritual “Maatru Bhiksha” was about to start. The boy’s mother and other ladies were ready to give ‘Bhiksha’.
But the boy with a small bag in his hand proceeded towards Dhanya who was standing in a remote corner with some rice and fruits to offer to the affectionate child._
While all the brahmin pundits were looking on and the ladies were standing in amazement, the boy prostrated before Dhanya and received the first ‘Bhiksha’ from a low caste woman, when untouchability was at its peak._
Dhanya, with tears in her eyes, blessed the child and this was her only desire in life.
While everyone expected a hue and cry about the incident, the chief pundit appreciated the child for the *”Sathya Vaak Paripaalanam”* and blessed him wholeheartedly.
The memorable silent revolution took place in a small village in West Bengal and the boy was *”GADHADHAR”* who became popular as *”Ramakrishna Paramahamsa”*.
It is perhaps, this seed of intimate love and affection originated from a poor lady that laid the foundation for the great Ramakrishna Mutt, surpassing all caste, creed and religions in the world.

Interpretation :

As the fable shows us, it is indeed principles like love and truth that transcend all man made barriers. This is one lesson, perhaps the only one we all need to learn in the journey of our lives to become better human beings.

CNY Inspirations: Don’t panic

This feature is coordinated by The Post-Standard/Syracuse.com and InterFaith Works of CNY. Follow this theme and author posted Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
One can always think of reasons to worry. That is especially easy to do now. This year, political conflict and social wrongs demanding redress have collided with the emotional and financial impacts of this pandemic, not to speak of the horrific loss of life. It would seem that this is a perfect moment to panic.
When Proverbs teaches, “One who is composed (literally, one who governs their own spirit) is better than a conqueror,” (16:32) it recognizes the great strength of will required not to be overcome by our instinctive reactions to life’s dangers and challenges.

Zen Fable : Christian Buddha

One of master Gasan’s monks visited the university in Tokyo. When he returned, he asked the master if he had ever read the Christian Bible. “No,” Gasan replied, “Please read some of it to me.” The monk opened the Bible to the Sermon on the Mount in St. Matthew, and began reading. After reading Christ’s words about the lilies in the field, he paused. Master Gasan was silent for a long time. “Yes,” he finally said, “Whoever uttered these words is an enlightened being. What you have read to me is the essence of everything I have been trying to teach you here!”

Interpretation
This situation is similar to thinking about different races. People may look different on the outside, but when you look on the inside, everyone is basically the same.

Zen fable : Lost in Thought

Master had a disciple who was always absorbed in a world of his own. He generally had that far away look and seemed to snap out of a mental trance whenever somebody addressed him.
Once he was standing next to the master in courtyard when master asked him to fetch some seed for birds. As was his state, master’s words did not register with him. Master turned to take a look and smilingly held his arm. Shaken and visibly embarrassed the disciple started to apologize profusely.
Master kind and benevolent as always, said ”do you know you can make these thoughts the road to your enlightenment”.
The disciple was curious. Other disciples also crowded in. They sensed Master was about to offer his wisdom, extempore.
“There are 7 categories of thoughts that your mind naturally indulges in”, Master stated.
“Three categories are related to cognition of events in time:
1) Observations about the present moment2) Memories of past moments.3) Thoughts that develop future scenarios for events yet to occur. Next three category of thoughts are related to mind’s evaluation of these events:
4) Judgments about whether something is good or bad, right or wrong for you and your kin.5) Storytelling thoughts that try to connect and explain why things happen.6) Planning, thoughts around activities that you want to do next.
Finally there are thoughts which are based on blue sky thinking.
7) Random fantasies and  what if scenarios, based on predicting and imagining sundry situations.” Thus explaining the master paused. None of the disciplines said anything as they all waited for the master to continue uninterrupted.
In his gentle flowing voice, Master carried on “When you are seeking liberation the idea is not to get taken in by the content of individual thoughts. Your task is to identify and label their category as above. As soon as a thought arises you fix its label “Planning, Storytelling, Past Memory, What if…..
“Remember” master cautioned ”the biggest blocks against total freedom are illusions and deceptions that block its path. A sharpened mind much like a fine edged axe, is the only weapon to cut through those obstructions. So when you label your thoughts you expand your consciousness around how it works. This enhanced awareness sharpens a regular mind which left alone is just a blunt instrument.
Finally as you become proficient with labeling, the flow of thoughts start to slow down and get less automatic. By and by you will notice all category of thoughts decreasing in numbers as also that you will be able to get on and get off them, whenever you want. Thats the sign of mind cutting its routine work load and relaxing. It is then free of illusions and ready for deeper perceptions.

Interpretation

As the master says, all we need to do is to develop awareness and control our minds. This is the g

Zen Fable : The Man Who Said Yes

A

A man went to a Buddhist monastery for a silent retreat. After he finished, he felt better, calmer, stronger, but something was missing. The teacher said he could talk to one of the monks before he left.

The man thought for a while, then asked: “How do you find peace?”

The monk said: “I say yes. To everything that happens, I say yes.”

When the man returned home, he was enlightened.

Interpretation

“Most of our pain, most of our suffering comes from resistance to what is. Life is. And when we resist what life is, we suffer. When you can say yes to life, surrender to life and say: “Okay, what should I be now?” That’s where power comes from.”

When the weather is bad, when your crush won’t answer, when the obstacle won’t budge, don’t say no. Don’t dig in your heels and push and shove until your veins pop out in frustration. Say yes. Accept. Breathe. Life is flowing. Always. It’s us trying to swim upstream. Let the current carry you instead.

Anecdote : Remain true to your values

Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was only a few meters from the finish line, but got confused with the signs and stopped, thinking he had finished the race. A Spanish man, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was going on, started shouting to the Kenyan to keep running. Mutai did not know Spanish and did not understand.

Realizing what was going on, Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory. A reporter asked Ivan, “Why did you do this?” Ivan replied, “My dream is that one day we can have some sort of community life where we push ourselves and help each other win.” The reporter insisted “But why did you let the Kenyan win?” Ivan replied, “I didn’t let him win, he was going to win. The race was his.”

The reporter insisted and asked again, “But you could have won!” Ivan looked at him and replied: “But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of this medal? What would my Mother think of it?” The values are transmitted from generation to generation. What values do we teach our children and how much do you inspire others to earn? Most of us take advantage of people’s weaknesses instead of helping to strengthen them.

Interpretation

We need to remain true to our values at all times whether or not we win in the so called external achievements. This is what makes us true winners in the journey of our lives.

Tale : The Man who used to urinate on my head when I was in the Prison

Nelson Mandela: “After I became president, I asked some members of my close protection to stroll with me in the city and have lunch at one of its restaurants. We sat in one of the downtown restaurants and all of us asked for some sort of food.”

“After a while, the waiter brought us our requests and I noticed that there was someone sitting in front of my table waiting for food”.

I then told one of the soldiers: go and ask that person to join us with his food and eat with us. The soldier went and asked the man so. The man brought up his food and sat by my side and began to eat. His hands were trembling constantly until everyone had finished their food and the man went. The soldier said to me: The man was apparently quite sick. His hands trembled as he ate!”

“No, not at all,” said Mandela.

“This man was the guard of the prison where I was jailed.

“Often, after the torture I was subjected to, I used to scream and ask for a little water.

“The very same man used to come every time and urinate on my head instead”.

“So I found him scared, trembling, expecting me to reciprocate now, at least in the same way, either by torturing him or imprisoning him as I am now the president of the state of South Africa.”

“But this is not my character nor part of my ethics”.

“The mentality of retaliation destroys states, while the mentality of tolerance builds nations”.

I say, treat others well because no one knows tomorrow.

#TalesOfAfrica

Interpretation :: As we can see above, we need to treat others no matter what they could have done to us. If one doesn’t do this, the cycle of hate and violence continues.

Sufi fable : All about forgiveness

One day, after offering the first obligatory prayers of the afternoon, shaykh Nasiruddin retired in his room for rest. There was no attendant at the door and even Mawlana Zainuddin ‘Ali, who was usually present at that time, was away.

A qalandar, called Turab, managed to enter the room and began to injure the shaykh with a knife. He inflicted eleven wounds on his body. The palm of the shaykh was severely injured and his fingers were so mutilated that he could not, during the rest of his life, take a pen in his hand or raise his finger while offering prayers. When blood gushed out of his wounds and ran into the water-hole, some murids of the shaykh rushed into the room bewildered and dazed.

They were about to retaliate upon the qalandar, but the shaykh intervened and asked Mawlana ‘Abdul Maqtaddir Thanesari, shaykh Sadruddin Tabib and Mawlana Zainuddin ‘Ali to swear on oath that they would not harm or harass the assailant in any way.

“I hope your knife has not injured your hand,” he asked Turab and presenting some money to him told him to run away before the news went round.

Interpretation

It is a truth that the truly enlightened always walk on the path of forgiveness which is what we all need to learn in the journey of our lives.

IN SEARCH OF A GUIDE

suftmysticA man is going in search of truth. As he comes out of his city, he finds an old man sitting under a tree. The young man does not know where to go in search of truth. He has heard that one has to go somewhere in search of truth, one has to go on a pilgrimage — but where? Roads go to all sides. Which road is the road?

Seeing the old man sitting under the tree, he thought: perhaps this man is old enough; he must know which road leads to truth. And he asked the man. He said, “Yes I know the road. Follow the right and go on until you come to a certain tree” — he described the tree in detail, its leaves, its fruit — “and you will find under it a very old man… just to give you an example, something like me but thirty years older. This is the man who is going to be your guide.”

The man was very happy. He thanked the old man and rushed towards the way he had shown him. For thirty years he was wandering and wandering, and the tree never came and the old man never came. He was getting tired, and he himself was getting old, and he said, “What nonsense!”

Finally he decided, “It is better to go back home… enough is enough! Thirty years I have wasted in searching truth, and I have not even met the old man who is going to be my guide. And God knows, when the guide meets me, what kind of guidance it will be and how long it will take. It seems to be too complicated; it is better to go home. I was running a good business. I destroyed the business and unnecessarily got into trouble hearing this word `truth’ again and again.”

He came back. Again he passed the tree — and he was shocked! This was the tree the old man had described. And he looked under the tree and the old man was there — the same old man, thirty years older and exactly the same as the description in every way. He said, “My God! Then why did you waste my thirty years?”

He said, “I wasted your thirty years — or you wasted my thirty years? At that time you were not ripe enough to be guided, because I gave all the guidance and you didn’t even look at the tree — and I was describing it in minute detail. I was describing your guide in minute detail, and you did not look at me, to see that I am describing myself. You were in such a hurry; you were too young. But nothing is wasted. I was, waiting, knowing that one day you will come back, one day you will recognize this tree, one day you will recognize this old man, that I am your guide!”

Interpretation : The story is immensely significant. It signifies we will surely find what we are looking for..wherever ot may be and from whoever it may be
