Scientists look to meteorites for inspiration to achieve critical element-free magnet
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Critical Materials Institute has developed a low-cost, high performance permanent magnet by drawing inspiration from an out-of-this-world source: iron-nickel alloys in meteorites. The magnet rivals widely used “Alnico” magnets in magnetic strength and has the potential to fill a strong demand for rare-earth- and cobalt-free magnets in the market.
How Mohit Aron’s Indian Hometown Inspired His Unicorn Company
Physical place is often a powerful influence on entrepreneurs. One thinks of Steve Jobs growing up in the suburbs south of San Francisco. The unique mashup of cultural rebels and computer geeks inspired Jobs to locate Apple at the intersection of science and art. It’s still the Apple address.
Today’s arguments are often conducted with weapons and tactics honed three centuries ago
In september the University of Edinburgh expunged the name of David Hume from an ugly teaching block. In response to a student petition, the university agreed that the views of the 18th-century thinker on the possible inferiority of non-white races, voiced in a tentative footnote to his essay “Of National Characters”, “rightly cause distress today”. Thomas Jefferson, a slave-owner, used almost identical language. So did Immanuel Kant.
A hermit was meditating by a river when a young man interrupted him.“Master, I wish to become your disciple,” said the man.“Why?” replied the hermit.
The young man thought for a moment.“
Because I want to find God.”The master jumped up, grabbed him by the scruff of his neck, dragged him into the river, and plunged his head under water.
After holding him there for a minute, with him kicking and struggling to free himself, the master finally pulled him up out of the river. The young man coughed up water and gasped to get his breath. When he eventually quieted down, the master spoke.
“Tell me, what did you want most of all when you were under water.” “Air!” answered the man. “Very well,” said the master.
“Go home and come back to me when you want God as much as you just wanted air.”
Interpretation
In all areas, it is desire that takes us wherever we wish to go. As a well known prayer says, Seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you, Seek and you shall find. This is true in all areas of life.

That is especially easy to do now. This year, political conflict and social wrongs demanding redress have collided with the emotional and financial impacts of this pandemic, not to speak of the horrific loss of life. It would seem that this is a perfect moment to panic. When Proverbs teaches, “One who is composed (literally, one who governs their own spirit) is better than a conqueror,” (16:32) it recognizes the great strength of will required not to be overcome by our instinctive reactions to life’s dangers and challenges.

One of master Gasan’s monks visited the university in Tokyo. When he returned, he asked the master if he had ever read the Christian Bible. “No,” Gasan replied, “Please read some of it to me.” The monk opened the Bible to the Sermon on the Mount in St. Matthew, and began reading. After reading Christ’s words about the lilies in the field, he paused. Master Gasan was silent for a long time. “Yes,” he finally said, “Whoever uttered these words is an enlightened being. What you have read to me is the essence of everything I have been trying to teach you here!”

Our Paralympians: Beacons of hope and inspiration in an uncertain world
Last week, we celebrated exactly 20 years since the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games. While there are differing views of the ongoing legacy of such games, there is no disputing the impact that they have on the amazing athletes on which the show revolves around, and the often transformative role they play in challenging wider society’s attitudes to people with disability and what they can achieve.

A monk told Joshu: “I have just entered the monastery. Please teach me.”
Joshu asked: “Have youeaten your rice porridge?”
The monk replied: “I have eaten.”
Joshu said: “Then you had better wash your bowl.”
At that moment the monk was enlightened.
Interpretation :
“There is something profound and yet minimalist about this advice. It’s: don’t get your head caught up in all this thinking about the meaning of life … instead, just do. Just wash your bowl. And in the washing, you’ll find all you need.”
We think we do, but, most of the time, there’s no need to think, plan or strategize, because, ultimately, it won’t make a big difference which option we choose. There’s always one or multiple next steps to take. So we might as well take any one of them. Often, there’s more satisfaction to be drawn from doing.
No matter how our path unfolds, mindfulness always lies on the way.

Socrates believed that the wise person would instinctively lead a frugal life. He himself would not even wear shoes; yet he constantly fell under the spell of the marketplace and would go there often to look at all the wares on display. When one of his friends asked why, Socrates said, “I love to go there and discover how many things I am perfectly happy without.”

Diviner inspiration: Australian artist sizes up silos for huge murals
Painted depictions of a water diviner searching for groundwater by Australian artist Fintan Magee are seen on unused wheat silos in Barraba, Australia, October 29, 2020. (REUTERS/Jill Gralow )
When Fintan Magee was asked to paint a mural on a trio of 40-meter high grain silos in the small Australian town of Barraba, he decided against an archetypal image of sheep and cattle.
Instead he painted a water diviner, a practice still used in parts of Australia where proponents believe they can find ground water with two metal rods or, as pictured in the mural, sticks.

Master had a disciple who was always absorbed in a world of his own. He generally had that far away look and seemed to snap out of a mental trance whenever somebody addressed him. Once he was standing next to the master in courtyard when master asked him to fetch some seed for birds. As was his state, master’s words did not register with him. Master turned to take a look and smilingly held his arm. Shaken and visibly embarrassed the disciple started to apologize profusely. Master kind and benevolent as always, said ”do you know you can make these thoughts the road to your enlightenment”. The disciple was curious. Other disciples also crowded in. They sensed Master was about to offer his wisdom, extempore. “There are 7 categories of thoughts that your mind naturally indulges in”, Master stated. “Three categories are related to cognition of events in time: 1) Observations about the present moment2) Memories of past moments.3) Thoughts that develop future scenarios for events yet to occur. Next three category of thoughts are related to mind’s evaluation of these events: 4) Judgments about whether something is good or bad, right or wrong for you and your kin.5) Storytelling thoughts that try to connect and explain why things happen.6) Planning, thoughts around activities that you want to do next. Finally there are thoughts which are based on blue sky thinking. 7) Random fantasies and what if scenarios, based on predicting and imagining sundry situations.” Thus explaining the master paused. None of the disciplines said anything as they all waited for the master to continue uninterrupted. In his gentle flowing voice, Master carried on “When you are seeking liberation the idea is not to get taken in by the content of individual thoughts. Your task is to identify and label their category as above. As soon as a thought arises you fix its label “Planning, Storytelling, Past Memory, What if….. “Remember” master cautioned ”the biggest blocks against total freedom are illusions and deceptions that block its path. A sharpened mind much like a fine edged axe, is the only weapon to cut through those obstructions. So when you label your thoughts you expand your consciousness around how it works. This enhanced awareness sharpens a regular mind which left alone is just a blunt instrument. Finally as you become proficient with labeling, the flow of thoughts start to slow down and get less automatic. By and by you will notice all category of thoughts decreasing in numbers as also that you will be able to get on and get off them, whenever you want. Thats the sign of mind cutting its routine work load and relaxing. It is then free of illusions and ready for deeper perceptions.
Interpretation
As the master says, all we need to do is to develop awareness and control our minds. This is the g

The warty frog and the prize goldfish met one summer afternoon in the temple pool. “Don’t you realize how beautiful I am?” bubbled the goldfish flashing her wispy tail. The frog made no reply. “I can understand your silence,” gloated the goldfish. “I am not only graceful in my movements but I also enhance the golden rays of the sun.” Again, neither answer or movements from the frog. “Say something,” demanded the goldfish just as a waiting crane speared the sparkling fish and flew into the sky. “Bye bye,” croaked the frog.

The wife of a man became very sick. On her deathbed, she said to him, “I love you so much! I don’t want to leave you, and I don’t want you to betray me. Promise that you will not see any other women once I die, or I will come back to haunt you.” For several months after her death, the husband did avoid other women, but then he met someone and fell in love. On the night that they were engaged to be married, the ghost of his former wife appeared to him. She blamed him for not keeping the promise, and every night thereafter she returned to taunt him. The ghost would remind him of everything that transpired between him and his fiancee that day, even to the point of repeating, word for word, their conversations. It upset him so badly that he couldn’t sleep at all.
Desperate, he sought the advice of a Zen master who lived near the village. “This is a very clever ghost,” the master said upon hearing the man’s story. “It is!” replied the man. “She remembers every detail of what I say and do. It knows everything!” The master smiled, “You should admire such a ghost, but I will tell you what to do the next time you see it.”That night the ghost returned. The man responded just as the master had advised. “You are such a wise ghost,” the man said, “You know that I can hide nothing from you. If you can answer me one question, I will break off the engagement and remain single for the rest of my life.” “Ask your question,” the ghost replied. The man scooped up a handful of beans from a large bag on the floor, “Tell me exactly how many beans there are in my hand.” At that moment the ghost disappeared and never returned.

A man was walking across a field when he saw a tiger. Fearing for his life, the man fled, but the tiger gave chase. The man reached the edge of a cliff, and just as he thought the tiger would get him, he spotted a vine growing over the edge of the cliff. Grabbing on to it, he swung himself over the edge to safety.
The tiger came to the edge and snarled at him from above. While precariously perched like this, the man saw another tiger growling at him from below. Trembling, he held on to the thin vine that was keeping him from being dinner for the tigers. What could be worse than this, he wondered.
Just then, two mice scampered out and began gnawing at the vine. As they chewed and the man pondered over his fate, he saw a juicy, red strawberry on a ledge next to him. Grasping the vine with one hand, he plucked the strawberry with the other. Ah, how sweet it tasted!

Earth911 Inspiration: We Are Part of This Web of Life, Not Its Masters
Earth911
Today’s Earth911 inspiration is from Pope Francis, who delivered a somber message about the state of our climate for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. He wrote: “Today we hear the voice of creation admonishing us to return to our rightful place in the natural created order – to remember that we are part of this interconnected web of life, not its masters.”
Taking up medicine and becoming a doctor is a challenge for many youngsters these days, as the profession faces the onslaught of new diseases and viral pandemics like COVID-19.
